Need Accompaniment?

From swing style to folk guitar accompaniment,
Hazel Wrigley can do it all!
–Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh – Irish fiddler (Altan)

“I love Hazel’s magic guitar playing. Innovative, with perfect timing and technique, and let’s not forget all done with mighty fun!” Dougie MacLean

“Every now and then, someone comes along and captures the imagination with the way Scottish traditional music is accompanied. Hazel Wrigley in her own unique way has modernised the way that traditional music is accompanied with her innovative style of guitar playing. When you add to that her delightful piano playing, Scotland has a musician that has greatly advanced our rich culture with her natural talent for traditional music. Hazel along with her twin sister Jennifer, best known as the Wrigley Sisters, have taken their music to many countries around the world to wonderful acclaim. The contribution made by Hazel to Scottish traditional music, and the Orkney tradition in particular, should be recognised at the yearly trad awards – if inventiveness means anything to our tradition, Hazel deserves to be up there with the best. Keep up the good music Hazel!” Phil Smillie, Tannahill Weavers

Hazel is an internationally renowned accompanist on both guitar and piano. Her chord choice augments and helps create the atmosphere in the laments and slow airs, while her chord progressions and driving rhythms, so necessary in the dance tunes, are superb.“ Brian Connolly – Irish banjo player (Craobh Rua)

“There are many fine guitarists in the tradition, but every now and again one shines like a huge beacon. Such a player is Hazel Wrigley. One of the best. World class!“Tom McConville – English Fiddler Player

“Hazel’s playing is always a journey which travels through many moods and landscapes, but rarely does she forget to pass through a land of wondermagic with a generous sprinkling of good fun humour.” Sarah MacFadjen – The Poozies

“I’ve always admired Hazel’s guitar playing…sometimes vibrant, rhythmic and driving…sometimes gentle, sympathetic and supportive. Above all, her music is always generous. Hazel has all the attributes of one of the finest guitarists in traditional music.“Chris Stout – Shetland Fiddler “Hazel’s guitar playing is as inventive as it is sympathetic. She really inhabits that swing, common between the Edinburgh scene that I know her from, and the Orcadian tradition that she’s a big part of.” Alasdair White – Scottish Fiddler (Battlefield Band)“Hazel Wrigley is one of the most swinging guitarists I have ever played with.
Great chords too!“ Simon Thoumire – Concertina player Glasgow

“Hazel’s accompaniment is always spot on, always interesting. She is strongly rhythmic, with a noticeable jazz influence, and attracts many supporters in her own right.” Yvonne Stevenson Robb

I love all types of music. My playing was most directly influenced by the local people of Orkney and Shetland. The swing style of guitar that was introduced by the legendary Peerie Willie Johnson was all around the two islands. Willie was always there, encouraging and helping me along. After traveling a little, I found new styles from the more Irish influenced accompaniments. There are so many musicians that I have met and had tunes with, that I can’t blame my style on anyone in particular. Accompaniment is so much about listening and watching all other people and trying to understand different ways of looking at things.
